What I Have Learned From Teaching

What I Have Learned From Teaching |
|
|
Many of us have head the phrase that teachers are
made, not born. Hence, we learn to become teachers and as teachers, we learn
to be better ones. Reflecting back on my teaching, there are a few things I
have learned. |
|
|
1 |
Strive to be the best you can
be, but know you will make mistakes. Learn from these mistakes. They are
often "teaching moments." |
|
2 |
Technology
is not perfect. Have a backup plan. Even if you are not using
technology, always have a backup plan. |
|
3 |
You will learn from your
students. It is important to recognize their knowledge and life experiences. |
|
4 |
A
syllabus should be thorough, but also allow for flexibility. |
|
5 |
Assess and let your students
know what your course goals are. This helps keep them, you, and the course on
track. |
|
6 |
You may
have a to take a few steps back. Making sure students have the tools to
learn in your course is more important than covering everything you wanted
to. |
|
7 |
People will give you advice in
teaching. Do not assume that it will always work the same way for you as it
did for them. |
|
8 |
Find
your own teaching style that you are comfortable with. If you are not
comfortable, the students will know. |
|
9 |
Have fun. Teaching is work, but
should be enjoyable for both you and the students. If you are not
enthusiastic to be there, how do you expect your students to be? |
|
10 |
Teaching
is emotional labor and you will play many roles. These include conveyor of
knowledge, mentor, rule enforcer, and many others. Yet, it is worth the time
and energy! |
